屋久島環境文化研修センターは、世界遺産に登録された屋久島の自然を学ぶための中核施設である。屋久島は生命の進化を知る上で貴重な存在である。周囲は約130kmの小さな島であるが、1,800ｍを越す峰々が連なり、山間部では8,000ｍｍを越す降雨量があり、固有な生態系を育んできた。数千年を生きる屋久杉はその代表格である。

計画地は杉の植林地であるが、谷部にはシダを中心とする隠花植物が豊かなフローラを形成しているため、計画ではこの谷部を保全し、建築群は屋根に沿うように配置されている。

ランドスケープデザインは建築と自然が調和するように谷水をつくった。やがて元の生態系が再生し、建築群は森に埋もれていく。

The Yakushima Environmental Culture Learning Center is a core facility for studying the natural environment of Yakushima, an island designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site. Yakushima is an extraordinary resource for learning about the evolution of life. While only a small island, having a circumference of just around 130km, there are ridges that rise above 1,800m. the annual precipitation of more than 8,000mm in the mountain areas has provided Ykushima with a remarkable ecological system most famously represented by a Yakusugi (Cryptomeria japonica) known to be several thousand years old. The planned location was within a man-made cedar forest set along a valley. However, the valley’s flora is highly diverse, comprising an abundance of cryptogamic plants (mainly ferns) and preservation concerns for the area led to the Center being constructed along a ridge. Within the facility’s landscape design, valley water has been allowed to carve out a harmoniously interlinked. In time, the original ecosystem will revive and completely cover the construction area.
